Western & Atlantic Railroad Tunnel

On December 30th we were lucky enough to visit Historic Western & Atlantic Railroad Tunnel located in Tunnel Hill GA.  The tunnel was amazing and had lots of history, our family loves exploring history and the Civil War.  Records show that construction of the tunnel began in 1848 and spans 1,477 feet.  The tunnel is located through the base of Chetoogeta Mountain, and the first Western & Atlantic train passed through the tunnel on May 9, 1850.  During the Civil War the tunnel was part of numerous historical events, and the last use of the tunnel was in 1928.  In 1992 after more than 70 years of neglect, the town wanted to preserve it.  Therefore after restoration and rehabilitation, the tunnel was opened for the public to explore in 2000, which was its 150th anniversary.  Our tour guide was a woman that was from CA and was reading out of a notebook with history facts; she was very nice and said every time she walks through with people she learns new facts.  Here are a few pictures of us exploring the tunnel.
